How do you stop trailers being stolen from a warehouse yard?

Reviewed October 2026 · for warehouse, yard and gate managers · quotes from CBP's CTPAT criteria and Verisk CargoNet, sources linked below

Short answer: make the yard hard to get into, make the gate the only way out, check who is taking each load, and count the yard against your gate log often enough that a missing trailer is noticed the same day. No single lock or tracker does all four. These are the controls U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) lists for trailer yards in its CTPAT security criteria (CTPAT Minimum Security Criteria, PDF).

Who wrote this: Vantage, the company that makes a gate and yard log app for warehouses, so we have a stake in gate records. CTPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) criteria bind the companies in that program, not every warehouse, but they are a well-tested checklist for any yard. How trailers go missing

There are two common patterns:

A fence stops the first kind. Only the gate process stops the second. Verisk's release does not say how many of these thefts happened at warehouse yards, so we don't give a yard-only number.

1. Secure the yard itself

2. Make the gate the only way out, and watch it

CTPAT says gates where vehicles enter or exit "must be manned or monitored," and recommends keeping the number of gates "to the minimum necessary" for access and safety (9.4). If a trailer can leave through an unwatched side gate, the rest of this list doesn't matter much.

Record every trailer that leaves: trailer number, carrier, driver, seal number if it is loaded, and the time. A log that only records arrivals can't tell you whether a missing trailer was picked up or stolen.

3. Check who is taking the load

4. Walk the yard against the log

A trailer that left without a gate-out record only shows up when someone compares the yard with the log. Do a yard check on a set schedule (busy yards often do one every shift), list every trailer you physically find, and compare it with what the gate log says should be on site. Anything the log expects but nobody found needs an answer before the end of the shift: was it moved, picked up without a record, or taken?

Our free yard check sheet is a printable way to start, and how to find lost trailers in the yard covers what to do once one is missing.

What about kingpin locks and GPS?

Kingpin locks, landing-gear locks and trailer GPS trackers are useful extra layers, especially for trailers dropped outside a fenced yard. They slow a thief down or help with recovery. They don't tell you whether the person picking up a load is who they say they are, which is why the gate steps above still matter.

Where Vantage fits

Vantage is a gate and yard log, not a lock, a camera or a GPS tracker. The gate clerk records each gate-in and gate-out on an iPhone or in any web browser, with a timestamp on every record and a photo whenever the camera is used; seal numbers are typed in. Recording the driver's name is an optional step in gate settings, off unless you turn it on. On every plan, including Free, when you run a yard check in the app, it compares the trailers you find with the ones the log says should be on site, marks the rest as missing, and creates an alert to investigate. Each yard check counts as one transaction.

The Free plan is $0 with no card: up to 3 users, 1 yard, 100 gate transactions a month and 30 days of history. Paid plans start at $149 a month (pricing). iPhone app, web browser, and an Android app on Google Play (an update fixing Google sign-in is on its way). Vantage does not stop a thief at the fence; it shows you sooner that a trailer is gone and when it was last recorded.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fictitious pickup?

A theft where someone collects a load using fake identification or a fake carrier identity. CBP describes fictitious pickups as criminal schemes that steal cargo by deception, including truck drivers using fake IDs and fictitious businesses set up for cargo theft. Checking photo ID and booking pickups by appointment are the defenses CBP lists.

Does a warehouse have to check a driver's ID before releasing a trailer?

For companies in CBP's CTPAT program, yes: drivers must be positively identified with government-issued photo ID before cargo is received or released. Outside CTPAT there is no single federal rule for every warehouse, but checking photo ID at release is a common practice.

How often should you do a yard check?

There is no federal schedule. Busy yards often check every shift. The point is to compare the trailers you find with what your gate log says should be there, often enough that a missing trailer is noticed the same day.

Will a yard management app stop trailer theft?

Not on its own. An app is not a fence, a lock or a guard. What a gate and yard log does is show sooner that a trailer is missing, and when it was last recorded at the gate, so you can act the same day instead of finding out from the carrier.

Is cargo theft going up or down?

Verisk CargoNet recorded 677 supply chain theft incidents in the U.S. and Canada in Q2 2026, down 26 percent from Q2 2025, but estimated losses more than doubled to $304.6 million, up from $135.7 million, because several thefts were worth millions each.
