What is a yard jockey in a warehouse?

The person who keeps the dock doors fed, and the yard record honest.

Reviewed October 2026

Short answer: a yard jockey moves trailers around a warehouse or distribution center yard, usually with a yard tractor. That means from the gate or a parking spot to a dock door, and back out when loading or unloading is done. The job keeps doors supplied and the yard in order, and a good jockey records every move so the office always knows where each trailer is. The same role is also called a yard driver, spotter, hostler or shunter.

What a yard jockey does in a shift

The work is mostly waiting to be told what to move next. That's why how moves get requested matters as much as how fast the tractor is.

What a yard move request should include

Whether moves come over the radio, on a whiteboard or in an app, each one needs the same fields. Without them, the jockey guesses and the log drifts.

FieldWhy
Trailer number"The blue Swift trailer" isn't a trailer number. Two carriers can use similar numbers.
From (spot or door)Saves a search. If the jockey can't find it at the "from" spot, the log is already wrong.
To (door or spot)One destination per move. "Somewhere in row C" becomes a lost trailer tomorrow.
PriorityA live load with a driver waiting goes ahead of an empty being repositioned.
Requested by / timeWho to call if the move doesn't make sense, and how long it waited.
Done timeCloses the move, and gives you moves per hour from records instead of estimates.

The safety handoff at the dock door

The riskiest moment is when a trailer the jockey has just spotted is about to be worked. OSHA requires that the brakes of highway trucks be set and wheel chocks placed under the rear wheels while powered industrial trucks board them (29 CFR 1910.178(k)(1)). It also notes that fixed jacks may be needed to support a semitrailer that isn't coupled to a tractor during loading or unloading (29 CFR 1910.178(m)(7)). Agree on who chocks or engages the restraint, and who confirms it before the dock crew goes in. Then write it into the move routine, so it happens on every move and not only when someone remembers.

How many jockeys do you need?

There's no standard ratio. Work it out from your own records:

  1. Count yard moves per shift, from the move log or from gate and door records.
  2. Time a typical move end to end: hook, drive, back in, unhook, paperwork.
  3. Moves per shift × minutes per move ÷ productive minutes in a shift = jockeys needed on average.
  4. Repeat for your busiest two hours. That's the number that decides whether doors sit empty.

If a jockey spends much of the shift searching for trailers, the fix is the yard record, not another jockey. The guide to losing fewer trailers covers it.

FAQ

What is another name for a yard jockey?

Yard driver, yard spotter, spotter, hostler, shunter and yard dog are all used, depending on the region and the company. The tractor is often called a yard tractor, yard truck, terminal tractor or spotter truck.

Do you need a license to be a yard jockey?

It depends on where the tractor is driven and on state rules. Moving trailers only inside a private yard is treated differently from driving on public roads, and employers set their own training and certification requirements. Check with the employer and your state licensing agency.

How many yard jockeys does a warehouse need?

Work it out from your own moves: count yard moves per shift from your records, multiply by the average minutes per move including hooking, driving and paperwork, and divide by the productive minutes in a shift. Size for the busiest hours, not the daily average.

Start the yard record at the gate.

Every move starts with knowing what came in and when. With Vantage, the guard logs gate in and out on a phone, with a timestamp on every record and a photo whenever the camera is used. The Free plan is $0 for 3 users, 1 yard and 100 gate transactions a month. No card. The live yard map and door board are included on Free too.
